Scales & Chords

Look up the notes of any scale, mode or chord in every key, correctly spelled, with interval formulas, a piano keyboard and playback.

C major
Formula

How to read the results

Choose a root note and a scale, mode or chord. You get the notes spelled correctly for that key, so F major shows B♭ rather than A♯, and the diminished seventh on C shows B𝄫. Each note carries its degree (1, ♭3, ♯4 and so on), and the keyboard highlights where to play it, with the root in orange.

Scale formulas

For scales the formula shows the steps between neighbouring notes: W is a whole tone (2 semitones), H a half tone (1 semitone), and 1½ an augmented second. The major scale is W W H W W W H, natural minor is W H W W H W W.

Modes

Dorian, Phrygian, Lydian, Mixolydian and Locrian are the major scale started from a different note. Comparing the degree numbers shows what makes each one special: Dorian has a natural 6, Lydian a ♯4, Mixolydian a ♭7.

Chords

For chords the formula lists the intervals above the root, with the number of semitones. Press Play to hear the notes one by one, or Play together for the full chord. Click any key to hear a single note.
