How to use the online tuner

  1. Press Start and allow the browser to use your microphone.
  2. Play one note at a time and let it ring.
  3. Tune until the needle sits in the green zone in the middle. Left of centre (negative cents) means flat, right means sharp.

It is a chromatic tuner, so it works for guitar, bass, ukulele, violin, cello, wind instruments and voice. The guitar string chips light up when you are close to one of the six open strings (E2 A2 D3 G3 B3 E4).

What is a cent?

A cent is one hundredth of a semitone. Most listeners cannot hear a difference below about 5 cents, so anything inside the green zone is in tune.

Changing the reference pitch

Most music uses A4 = 440 Hz. Some orchestras tune slightly higher (442 or 443 Hz) and baroque ensembles often use 415 Hz. Set the value above and every note is measured against it.

Is my audio recorded?

No. The sound is analysed on your own device and is never stored or sent anywhere.
