Choose intervals to practise

How to practise intervals

  1. Press Play new interval. Two notes sound, one after the other or together.
  2. Pick the interval you heard. A wrong answer turns red and the right one turns green, then you can listen again to compare.
  3. Start with a few intervals, for example the perfect 4th, perfect 5th and octave, and add more as your score improves.

Ascending, descending, harmonic

Ascending intervals are usually the easiest. Descending intervals sound different even though the distance is the same, so train them separately. Harmonic intervals play both notes at once, which is how you hear them in chords.

A tip that works

Link each interval to the opening of a melody you know well. When you hear an interval, sing the start of that tune in your head and check whether it fits. With practice you stop needing the reminders.

How long should I practise?

Ten minutes a day helps more than an hour once a week. Your score is kept only for this visit, so every session starts fresh.
